Could you hear me?
2025
Shot in Harcourt Arboretum, Oxford (4K video still)
A short film follows a girl whispering into tree hollows in an arboretum, trees that have been uprooted, transported, and replanted, isolated from their original ecosystems. Through this child-like act of connection, it explores themes of displacement, memory, and care in our relationship with nature.
A tree hollow shelters animals, but does it shelter the human voice?
Is it a confession chamber, a space for unburdening, what could be contained?
Does the tree listen, or does it simply contain, bearing the weight of words without judgment or response?
What happens when the tree falls?
Does the hollow lose its function, its role as a listener?
The eligibility of an ear?
If the tree bears the weight of my words, what do I bear in return?
Can the tree be a witness if it cannot choose to look away?
